The Entire Production Process of Plastic Bottles: A Detailed Breakdown from Preform Injection Molding, Blow Molding, Screen Printing to Factory Inspection

Jul 13, 2026

In the packaging supply chains for food, pharmaceutical, daily chemical and chemical industries, plastic bottles stand out as the most widely used packaging containers thanks to their advantages including safety, lightweight structure, corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness. Many clients only focus on appearance, dimensions and pricing when customizing plastic bottles, yet they have little knowledge that a high-quality plastic bottle requires multiple precision processes and multi-layer inspections before delivery. The quality stability, sealing performance, safety and exquisite appearance of plastic bottles all depend on production techniques and quality control systems. Today, we will fully unpack the complete production workflow of plastic bottles from raw materials to finished products, illustrate the forming logic of premium packaging bottles, and demonstrate the production standards of formal manufacturers.

The Entire Production Process of Plastic Bottles: A Detailed Breakdown from Preform Injection Molding, Blow Molding, Screen Printing to Factory Inspection

Step 1: Raw Material Screening & Preprocessing – Control Safety & Quality from the Source
Premium finished products start with high-quality raw materials. All food-grade, pharmaceutical-grade and daily chemical-grade plastic bottles manufactured in our factory adopt virgin raw materials such as PET, HDPE and PP, with zero recycled mixed materials used. This eliminates hidden risks including impurities, peculiar odors and residual harmful substances from the very beginning.
Raw materials will not be directly put into production after arrival; they must undergo strict preprocessing procedures:
First, professional equipment screens and removes foreign particles to eliminate damaged grains and impurities. Next, constant-temperature drying is conducted to thoroughly remove internal moisture in raw materials. This prevents hydrolysis, air bubbles and hazy bottle bodies caused by high-temperature processing, guarantees stable molding and high transparency in subsequent procedures, and fully complies with GB4806.7 National Standard for Food Contact Materials.

Step 2: Preform Injection Molding – Lay the Foundation for Bottle Precision
Preforms are the rudiments of plastic bottles and the core factor determining bottle wall thickness and mouth precision. Our factory adopts fully automatic injection molding equipment to realize standardized and refined preform production.
Dried plastic pellets are transported through pipelines to the injection molding machine barrel, heated to 250–280°C in segmented constant temperature for plasticization. Under high pressure of 80–120 MPa, molten plastic is evenly injected into high-precision molds. After pressure holding and constant-temperature cooling shaping, qualified preforms are automatically ejected.
This procedure implements strict control over bottle neck threads, preform wall thickness and surface flatness, ensuring consistent dimensions across batches with no burrs, cracks or uneven mouths. It fundamentally avoids common defects in subsequent blow molding such as bottle deformation, poor sealing and loose cap fitting, laying a solid foundation for finished product quality.

Step 3: Fully Automatic Blow Molding – Form Standard Bottle Shapes
After cooling and shaping, preforms are transferred to the fully automatic blow molding production line for forming, the key stage to finalize bottle profiles.
The equipment first conducts precise secondary heating to uniformly soften preforms, then transfers them into custom molds. High-pressure compressed air of 0.3–0.8 MPa is applied for stretching and blowing, fully expanding preforms to fit tightly against mold inner walls.
Meanwhile, circulating cooling water at 15–25°C rapidly cools and shapes bottles, hardening them quickly and locking dimensions to perfectly replicate various customized bottle designs from molds, including wide-mouth bottles, narrow-mouth bottles, light-proof bottles, handle-equipped bottles and special-shaped bottles.
Full automatic operation eliminates errors from manual production, delivering bottles with smooth curves, uniform wall thickness, precise dimensions and no dents or deformities, greatly boosting production efficiency and product consistency.

Step 4: Surface Treatment – Enhance Appearance & Practicality
After molding, plastic bottles can undergo diversified surface processing per customized client requirements to support brand packaging upgrades. Mainstream processes include screen printing, hot stamping, labeling and UV coating, among which screen printing and labeling are our most mature conventional customization techniques.
Screen printing adopts food-grade eco-friendly ink. Precision screen printing machines accurately print logos, product information, patterns and texts on bottle bodies with strong adhesion, high wear resistance and zero peculiar odor, suitable for food and pharmaceutical scenarios with stringent safety standards.
Labeling supports color film-covered, transparent and self-adhesive custom labels, which attach smoothly without bubbles or warping for an elegant overall look.
All surface treatments pass adhesion tests to resist friction and abrasion during transportation, storage and usage, balancing aesthetic appeal and practical performance.

Step 5: Rigorous Multi-Stage Inspection – Establish Quality Barriers Before Delivery
A molded bottle does not equal a qualified finished product. Adhering to the principle of "100% inspection for every bottle", our factory builds a full-dimensional finished product inspection system covering appearance, performance and safety testing to block defective goods from entering the market.
1.Dual Manual & Machine Appearance Inspection: Each bottle is checked one by one for scratches, black spots, air bubbles, deformation and burrs. The integrity of bottle neck threads and flatness of bottle bottoms are verified to filter out defective products and ensure uniform, exquisite appearance.
2.Leakage & Sealing Test: Matching caps are assembled on finished bottles for high-pressure air tightness testing, simulating transportation and warehouse storage environments to detect liquid/gas leakage. This guarantees liquid, powder and sauce contents are tightly sealed against leakage and moisture.
3.Periodic Material Safety Sampling Inspection: Samples are sent for regular testing to verify raw material safety, zero BPA content and no precipitation of harmful substances. Products meet domestic food contact standards and European & American export certifications, supporting domestic and overseas trade scenarios.

Step 6: Dust-Free Cleaning & Packaging – Warehousing, Packing & Shipment
All qualified plastic bottles go through dust removal in a dust-free workshop to clear surface dust and impurities, followed by classified individual packaging and sealed bundling. Standard cartons and stretch film are used for protection to prevent scratches and breakage during transit.
Standardized warehouse management is implemented with batch, specification and application registration to ensure accurate order delivery and flexible response to bulk purchases, small-batch customization and urgent shipment demands.
